American Walnut (Jglans nigra) is a long time favorite for furniture and fine objects due to it's workability, close grain and rich look. It will naturally vary from rich brown in kiln dried form to a redder appearance (like mahogany)in air dried pieces. The outer edge of the tree, the sapwood, will be much lighter in color and can contribute to striking figure. It is much softer than oak and will therefore show wear much faster as flooring, an important consideration where high traffic is concerned. Its ease of working has long made it a favorite for furniture makers and carvers. It has natural shock absorbing characteristics which make it excellent for gun stocks.
