Northern Hard Maple (Acer saccharum) is a very useful wood, often seen as cutting surfaces in food preparation areas. The tight, closed pore structure means that liquids cannot penetrate the wood. It is slightly harder than oak, making it an old favorite for gymnasium floors. Its clean, light colored appearance makes it ideal for modern furniture and cabinets. There is no obvious grain, so it will stain uniformly and give the appearance of cherry. The lack of grain means that any scratches not removed by sanding will grab stain particles and show up in the staining process. This may prompt the stainer to use a "conditioner" before staining.
